Participates in the \u2018First Exhibition of the Genbi Group\u2019, a movement started by Muramatsu Hiroshi but with Yoshihara as the true guiding light. The event, held at the Asahi Biru Gallery in Kobe, brings together the group of young artists who would set up the Gutai Group shortly afterwards.<\/p>\n<p>1954 Under Yoshihara\u2019s guidance, Shimamoto and other students found the Gutai Concrete Art Movement. Shimamoto suggests the name and makes his home available to the group; it becomes their official headquarters. It is from here that the \u2018Gutai\u2019 journals, the official magazine of the Association, are printed and distributed.<\/p>\n<p>1955 The first \u2018Gutai\u2019 journal comes out; it contains some photographs of works by the artists of the group, including one by Shimamoto. The members of Gutai and the Zero-Kai Group (Tanaka, Shiraga, Murakami, Kanayama), take part in the \u20187<sup>th<\/sup> Yomiuri Independent Exhibition\u2019, an annual event held by the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum to give young artists a platform. On this occasion, their works are signed \u2018Gutai\u2019. During the \u2018Experimental Outdoor Modern Art Exhibition to challenge the Midsummer Burning Sun\u2019, the first autonomous meeting of the Gutai Group held in the Ashiya pine forest, Shimamoto exhibits a sheet of metal dotted with small holes painted white on one side and blue on the other. In the evening, a lamp illuminates the sheet from behind, creating an effect like a starry sky. In the same year, Shimamoto takes part in the \u2018First Gutai Exhibition\u2019, held indoors at the Ohara Kaikan in Tokyo: for the occasion he presents his \u2018Please, walk on here\u2019 made from a series of wooden planks mounted on a system of springs that make the visitors\u2019 path precarious and unstable.<\/p>\n<p>1956 At the \u2018Second Exhibition of Modern Art outdoors\u2019, Shimamoto stages the \u2018Performance of Destruction\u2019, in which he experiments with a new technique where he fires paint-filled bags from a cannon to the accompaniment of background music. In October 1956, Gutai hold their second exhibition at Ohara Kaikan in Tokyo: Shimamoto puts a large canvas on the floor. Then he places a boulder in the middle and hurls bottles filled with different coloured paints at it. This is the first experiment in the <em>bottle crash<\/em> technique, one that will reflect on much of his future work. \u2018Life\u2019 magazine covers a performance by Shimamoto (never published).<\/p>\n<p>1957 Takes part in the first \u2018Gutai Art on the Stage\u2019 exhibition at the Sankei Center in Osaka, showing his pioneering video and audio works. He also participates in the \u2018First Exhibition of Young Asahi Talent\u2019 at the Takashimaya department store in Asahi.<\/p>\n<p>1958 During the second \u2018Gutai Art on the Stage\u2019 performance at the Asahi Kaikan, he simultaneously projects on the same screen two different films of his own. Speaking of this he says, \u2018For this event I decided to do something called \u201cThe movie never seen all over the world\u201d\u2019. Taking used 35 mm film given to him by a former pupil, which he then washes in vinegar, Shimamoto adds dots and lines. The second evening of \u2018Gutai Art on the Stage\u2019 is part of the \u2018International Festival of Osaka\u2019. It includes the \u2018International Art of a New Era. Informal and Gutai\u2019 exhibition at the Takashimaya department store. Here the Gutai Group strengthen their ties with the French critic Michel Tapi\u00e9, having made contact during his visit with artist Georges Mathieu the year before.<\/p>\n<p>1959 The BBC covers his action painting at the Toyosaki school: the work consists in throwing glass bottles full of paint. An event, \u2018<em>Arte Nuova<\/em>\u2019, is organised for the Turin International Festival at Palazzo Granieri, with approximately one hundred canvases by European, American, and Japanese artists (Gutai and informal) on show.<\/p>\n<p>1961 Tapi\u00e9 promotes the exhibition \u2018<em>Continuit\u00e9 et avant-garde au Japon\u2019 <\/em>at the International Center of Aesthetic Research in Turin.<\/p>\n<p>1962 Shimamoto holds his first solo exhibition at the Gutai Pinacotheca, opening in September of the same year in Osaka.<\/p>\n<p>1965 Takes part in the \u2018<em>Nul Negentienhonderd vijf en Zegtig\u2019<\/em> exhibition at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam.<\/p>\n<p>1966 Participates in the \u2018<em>II Salon International des Galeries Pilotes\u2019 <\/em>at the Cantonal Museum of Fine Arts in Lausanne, Switzerland.<\/p>\n<p>1969 Takes part in the \u2018<em>IX Exposition d\u2019art japonais contemporain\u2019<\/em> at the Tokyo Museum.<\/p>\n<p>1972 Holds two solo exhibitions: one at the Galeria Sobrad in S\u00e3o Paulo and the other at the Muramatsu in Tokyo. With Yoshihara\u2019s death, the Gutai Group dissolves. Shimamoto begins to take an interest in Mail Art.<\/p>\n<p>1975-1976 Becomes involved with the Artists\u2019 Union Group and is elected chief secretary. He becomes one of the leading exponents of Mail Art and develops a new and very personal vision of the man-artist and the work of art as a product of a social and collective effort.<\/p>\n<p>1976 Takes part in the exhibition \u2018Today\u2019s notion of space\u2019 at the Municipal Art Gallery in Yokohama and the retrospective exhibition \u201818 years of Gutai art\u2019 at the Art Gallery of the Osaka Prefecture.<br \/>\nMakes a road from 10,000 pages of newspapers along the bank of the river Mukogawa.<\/p>\n<p>1979 Exhibits 10,000 daily papers at the \u2018World Symposium Invitation Show\u2019 in Alberta, Canada. Part of the \u2018After Yoshihara and the Gutai\u2019 collective at the Museum of Modern Art in Kobe.<\/p>\n<p>1981 Holds a solo exhibition at the Osaka Center for Contemporary Art.<\/p>\n<p>In the same year he exhibits at \u2018Directions in Japanese Art 1 &#8211; The 50s &#8211; Darkness and Rays of Light\u2019 at the Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo and participates in the group exhibition \u201cWestkunst \u2013 Eine Ausstellung, veranstaltet von den Museen der Stadt K\u00f6ln\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>1982 Presents his works at \u2018Towards the Museum of Tomorrow &#8211; The Theatre of Living Art\u2019 at the Museum of Modern Art in Kobe.<\/p>\n<p>1983 Elected mayor of the Ryujin International Art Village. Takes part in \u20186 Gutai Artists-Artists Union\u2019 exhibition with five other artists at the Itami Municipal Art Gallery.<\/p>\n<p>1984 Presents a performance at the Hundertmark Gallery in Cologne and participates in the exhibition \u2018Gutai Works: Shiraga, Motonaga, Murakami, Uemae, Kanayama, and others\u2019, at Studio Morra in Naples.<\/p>\n<p>1985 On show in Antwerp and Osaka. Goes to Oxford for the retrospective \u2018Reconstructions: Avant-Garde Art in Japan 1945-1965\u2019 at the Museum of Modern Art. Also in 1985 he is invited to Madrid for the \u2018<em>Gutai Group: Pintura y Acci\u00f3n\u2019<\/em> exhibition at the Spanish Museum of Contemporary Art, and then to the Muszej Savremene Umetnosti in Belgrade and the Museum of Modern Art in Kobe.<\/p>\n<p>1986 Shimamoto invites Guglielmo Achille Cavellini, the leading Italian mail artist, to the \u2018First Osaka Sister-City Festival\u2019. From now on, Shimamoto will continue to use his shaved head as a medium for his Mail Art activities, participating in the \u2018Peace Run\u2019 across Europe organised by the American Indian Group. Participates in the exhibition \u2018<em>Japon des avant gardes\u2019<\/em> at the Centre Georges Pompidou, where he presents his audio works.<\/p>\n<p>1987 Invited by the Dallas Museum to stage a performance on the centenary of Marcel Duchamp\u2019s birth, he projects messages of peace and film clips onto his shaved head.<\/p>\n<p>1990 For the opening of the \u2018<em>Giappone<\/em> <em>all\u2019avanguardia. II Gruppo Gutai negli anni Cinquanta\u2019<\/em> exhibition, the Galleria Nazionale d\u2019Arte Moderna in Rome invites Shimamoto to reproduce his 1956 performance done at the \u2018Second exhibition at the Ohara Kaikan\u2019 in Tokyo, adding new meanings related to Network philosophy. Shimamoto invites postal artists to send him small objects to put inside small paint-filled bottles. The large canvas is inspired by the Network, and contains paint, grains of rice, shells, sand, and other materials of this kind.<\/p>\n<p>1991 He is invited to take part in the \u2018<em>Gutai Japanische Avantgarde 1954-1965<\/em>\u2019 exhibition organised by the Institut Mathildenh\u00f6he in Darmstadt and contributes ten large-scale works. A photo of one of his performances appears in \u2018Flash Art International\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>1993 Invited to the 45<sup>th<\/sup> Venice Biennial as a member of Gutai. Performs a bottle crash<em>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>1994 On show at the exhibition \u2018Japanese Art after 1945: scream against the sky\u2019 organised by Alexandra Munroe at the Guggenheim in New York.<\/p>\n<p>1996 Nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in recognition of his pacifist activity after meeting nuclear physicist Bern Porter in Japan. Porter had been involved in developing the nuclear bomb dropped on Hiroshima.<\/p>\n<p>1997 Solo exhibition with a performance: \u2018Shozo Shimamoto, Gutai-Works\u2019 at the Hundertmark Gallery in Cologne.<\/p>\n<p>1998 At \u2018Out of Actions: Between Performance and the Object, 1949-1979\u2019, at the Museum of Contemporary Art (MoCA) in Los Angeles, his 1950 work \u2018Holes\u2019 is displayed in the same room as Pollock, Cage and Fontana. The exhibition then travels to the \u00d6sterreichisches Museum f\u00fcr angewandte Kunst in Vienna and then on to the Museu d\u2019Art Contemporani in Barcelona and the Tokyo City Museum of Art<\/p>\n<p>1999 Invited again to the Venice Biennial. He travels to Verona and Milan for the \u2018Shozo Shimamoto Italian Festival\u2019, with works from the fifties and sixties, large-scale installations, and documentation on mail art. A retrospective Gutai collective is held at the Galerie Nationale du Jeu de Paume in Paris.<\/p>\n<p>2000 Shimamoto does a large-scale performance in France, sponsored by the Felissimo Museum, in which he creates an enormous surface out of sheets of newspaper from all over the world. He throws paint-filled balloons down onto the canvas from a hot air balloon. One of the works produced during the performance is displayed at the Unesco Head Office in Paris.\u2028 The Nishinomiya Yacht Harbour hosts the start of a work entitled \u2018A Proof of Peace\u2019, which will remain in place as a monument for 100 years.<\/p>\n<p>2001 Invited to the London \u2018Japan Year\u2019. Some of his works are purchased by the Tate Modern. Takes part in the exhibition \u2018<em>Le Trib\u00f9 dell\u2019Arte\u2019 <\/em>by Achille Bonito Oliva at the Galleria Nazionale d\u2019Arte Moderna in Rome.<\/p>\n<p>2002 Takes part in \u2018Who\u2019s Norma Jeane?\u2019 organised by the Primrose Gallery in London.<\/p>\n<p>2003 Invited to the 50<sup>th<\/sup> Venice Biennial presenting the \u2018Brain Academy Apartment International Project\u2019. Also in Italy, he takes part in \u2018Skin Deep\u2019 at the Museo di Arte Moderna e Contemporanea &#8211; MART, in Rovereto and at \u2018<em>Living Theatre\/Labirinti dell\u2019Immaginario<\/em>\u2019 organised by Lorenzo Mango and Giuseppe Morra at Castel Sant\u2019Elmo, Naples.<\/p>\n<p>2004 A performance using a helicopter, organised by the \u2018Association bbcc Onlus (ABCOnlus)\u2019 and architect Luigi de Marchi as a pre-event prior to the 2005 Venice Biennial.<\/p>\n<p>2005 A second performance in Italy, this time in Trevi, where he hurls paint out of a helicopter. He also obtains a solo exhibition organised by Guglielmo di Mauro at the Flash Art Museum.<br \/>\nSolo exhibition in May at Atelier 25 in Reggio Emilia, together with the Associazione Pari&amp;Dispari.<\/p>\n<p>Takes part in the exhibition \u2018<em>Un cuscino per sognare\u2019 <\/em>promoted by the Reggio Emilia City Council in conjunction with the Archivio Pari&amp;Dispari<\/p>\n<p>2006 Invited to show ten of his works and two reconstructions of \u2018Please, walk on here\u2019 at the \u2018<em>Zero. Avant-garde Internationale des ann\u00e9es 1950-60<\/em>\u2019 collective at the Kunst Palast Museum in D\u00fcsseldorf and later at the Mus\u00e9e d\u2019Art Moderne in Saint Etienne. In the historical Piazza Dante in Naples, he presents the performance-event \u2018A weapon of Peace\u2019 where, raised up in the air from a crane, he holds a small sphere full of coloured paint that he throws down onto the canvas in a seraphic gesture.<\/p>\n<p>The action is accompanied by the music of Charlemagne Palestine. The performance is organised in conjunction with Rosanna Chiessi\u2019s Archivio Storico Pari&amp;Dispari followed by the \u2018<em>Shozo Shimamoto. Opere<\/em> <em>anni \u201950-\u201990<\/em>\u2019 exhibition at the Morra Foundation. The Chinese Government invite him to hold performances in Beijing and Chang Xing.<\/p>\n<p>2007 He presents the Felissimo WHITE PROJECT performance at the Kobe Fashion Museum. The works created are displayed at the Hyogo Prefectural Diplomatic Establishment and at the Kobe Fashion Museum. Attends the \u201cP3 Project\u201d for the Venice Biennial, where he performs a Bottle Crash in the cloister of San Nicol\u00f2. A few of his more representative works are displayed at the \u2018Artempo\u2019 collective organised by Mattijs Visser and Axel Vervoordt at Palazzo Fortuny in Venice.<\/p>\n<p>2008 On May 7<sup>th<\/sup> Shimamoto carries out a performance at Punta Campanella, Naples. It involves a group of dancers dressed as brides with glasses full of paint on their heads. On May 9<sup>th<\/sup> he does a performance in the cloister of the Certosa di San Giacomo in Capri, hurling paint onto eight canvases stretched out on the ground and two double basses beside them, covered with musical scores and held up by two young women. Also at the Certosa di San Giacomo in Capri, he exhibits a number of works at the \u2018<em>Vento d\u2019Oriente<\/em>\u2019 exhibition. <em>Museo Magi \u2018900<\/em> in Pieve Di Cento (BO) hosts Shozo Shimamoto\/Yasuo Sumi \u2013 Colours of Peace, with a performance in the Museum\u2019s Modigliani room. On November 13<sup>th <\/sup>2008, the Museo d\u2019Arte Contemporanea at Villa Croce, Genoa, hosts \u2018<em>Shozo Shimamoto. <\/em><em>Samurai, acrobata dello sguardo<\/em>\u2019, by Achille Bonito Oliva.<\/p>\n<p>2009 For \u2018Roma. Road to Contemporary Art\u2019, Shimamoto shows two works in different exhibitions: \u2018<em>Cose mai viste II<\/em>\u2019, by Achille Bonito Oliva at Palazzo Barberini, dedicated to works from the artists\u2019 private collections, and at the Palazzo delle Esposizioni, with the Fondazione Morra, the Archivio Pari&amp;Dispari, and the Associazione Shozo Shimamoto. Invited to the 53<sup>rd<\/sup> Venice Biennial \u201cMaking Worlds\u201d, with the other members of Gutai. He takes part in the collective exhibition \u2018<em>Madre Coraggio:<\/em> <em>l\u2019arte<\/em>\u2019 organised by Achille Bonito Oliva as part of the Ravello Festival. He holds a solo exhibition at the \u2018<em>VV8 arte contemporanea<\/em>\u2019 Gallery in Reggio Emilia, in conjunction with the Associazione Shozo Shimamoto, entitled \u2018<em>La danza del colore<\/em>\u2019, with a performance by choreographer Mauro Bigonzetti and four dancers from the Fondazione Nazionale della Danza Aterballetto who bring to life the wedding dresses made by Shimamoto for the action in Punta Campanella.<\/p>\n<p>2011 Shimamoto exhibits sculptures and large canvases from the performances in Venice, Punta Campanella, Capri, and Genoa at the Basilica of Santo Stefano in Bologna for \u2018Arte Fiera OFF\u2019 at an event organised by Achille Bonito Oliva. Solo exhibition at the Morra Foundation in Naples. In addition to the large-scale works, there are two video projections by Mario Franco documenting the Piazza Dante performance in Naples (2006) and the one held in Punta Campanella.<br \/>\nShimamoto is invited to do two performances at the Moderna Museet of Stockholm, Sweden for \u2018An experimental conference on art and science to challenge the mid-summer sun\u2019, where he reinterprets his 1956 cannon performance and the stage performance of 1957.<\/p>\n<p>2012 From March 14<sup>th<\/sup> to May 5<sup>th<\/sup>, 2012 he runs a personal exhibition, \u2018Shozo Shimamoto\u2019, at the Axel Vervoordt Gallery in Antverp (Belgium).<\/p>\n<p>2013 On January 25<sup>th<\/sup> 2013, Shozo Shimamoto dies in Osaka.
